Hayley Williams Is Flipping the Script

By: Havannah Singletary

How the queen of pop-punk is reclaiming (yet maintaining) her image as a star!

Hayley Williams is one of the biggest names in the alternative rock and pop-punk scene. Known for her strong vocals as the Paramore lead singer and ever-changing hair, she has always been unapologetically herself. Since departing from Atlantic Records in late 2023, she has only leaned more into artistic authenticity.

About Hayley Williams

Hayley Williams is most well known for being the lead singer and founding member of pop-punk band Paramore.

After leaving Mississippi with her mother and settling in Tennessee when she was thirteen, Hayley began taking voice lessons and got signed to Atlantic Records. The label wanted her to be a solo act, but she was adamant that she make music with her band. She was the only one out of the four founding members signed to Atlantic. The founding members consisted of Hayley Williams (vocals), Jeremy Davis (bass), and brothers Zac Farro (drums) and Josh Farro (guitar and backing vocals).

Despite being the main face of Paramore, Williams has always been vocal about the fact that Paramore is a band and not just Hayley’s project.

Since then, the band has undergone several changes with members. Currently, the band (which is currently on hiatus) consists of Hayley Williams (vocals), Zac Farro (drums) and Taylor York (guitar).

The band has released six studio albums: All We Know Is Falling, Riot!, Brand New Eyes, Paramore, After Laughter and This Is Why. Williams has also released three solo albums: Petals For Armor, Flowers For Vases/Descansos, and her latest and most famous solo project, Ego Death At a Bachelorette Party.

Williams’ 20-year contract with Atlantic ended in December 2023. Since the completion of the contract, Williams has been hard at work on several new endeavors.

Spontaneity and New Songs

In July 2025, fans of Hayley Williams would be in for a wild ride. She debuted a new song called “Mirtazapine” on a Nashville radio station. Listeners loved the song’s themes and were very excited to see what she would do next.

Williams would then release snippets (eventually full-length tracks) of seventeen new songs on her website. Every few days she would post a new photo or teaser on her website and kept fans on their toes.

This method of garnering true fan engagement proved to be effective. It almost seemed like Williams was “leaking” her own songs.

Finally, on August 1 2025, Hayley Williams would release seventeen individual singles on Spotify and other platforms. Each of the singles had unique, individual artwork that reflected the vibe of the song.

Hayley Williams would then ask the fans to send in their playlists of the songs and used inspiration from those to create the order of the tracklist for the album.

Williams then released “Parachute” and “Good Ol’ Days,” both of which went viral and received a lot of praise. Finally, upon releasing the full-length album, she released the finale track, “Showbiz” on November 7, 2025. In total, the album had twenty tracks.

Dissecting Ego

Ego Death At a Bachelorette Party is Williams’ first release since founding her own record label, Post Atlantic. The album features incredible lyrics by Williams and excellent production with the help of longtime collaborator, Daniel James.

The songs on the album dive into themes such as finding love, heartbreak, religious guilt, deconstruction of faith, politics and reminiscence of her time in Paramore.

While it has never been confirmed, it is heavily implied and rumored that many of the songs on Ego are about her alleged breakup with Paramore guitarist and former collaborator, Taylor York.

Lyrical Analysis

Lines such as “Asked me on a plane from Rio / ‘Do I ever think of us?’’’ and “You were at my wedding / I was broken, you were drunk” from “Parachute” were the main lines that stood out to fans for being almost “too specific” to not be a reference to York. Williams’ delivery of these lines is also incredibly emotional both live and in the recording.

“True Believer” is also a standout track. The song is about the gentrification of Nashville and corruption of the church. The lines that made my jaw drop as soon as I heard them were “Strange Fruit, Hard Bargain / Till the roots, Southern Gotham.” “Strange Fruit” is a song performed by Billie Holliday in protest to lynching of African Americans. Hard Bargain is a historically African American community in Nashville. The land was purchased by a formerly enslaved man from his former enslaver. The Hard Bargain Association resists the gentrification mentioned in the song.

“Good Ol’ Days” has some of the most creative lines featured in the whole album. “I’m not Stevie, I won’t hex ya” cleverly references Stevie Nicks. There is also irony in this line (whether intentional or not) because Paramore has often been dubbed “the Fleetwood Mac of the new generation” due to its rotating band members and relationships within the band.

Also from “Good Ol’ Days,” the most clever line in the album (in my opinion) is: “We can sneak around like we’re on tour / Even if that’s all you want me for / You could call me Miss Paramour.” “Paramour” means secret love in French. Williams also refers to herself as “Miss Paramore” because she is the lead singer and often the face of the band. The band name “Paramore” stems from a surname of a founding member’s relative, and has the double meaning of “secret love.”

“Ice In My OJ” is the first track listed on the album. The intro and chorus of the song interpolate lyrics from Mammoth City Messengers, which is a Christian comic series. Williams did vocals for their song, “Jumping Inside” in 2004. “Ice In My OJ” takes these lyrics and spins them into a reflective song about her time in a band (even screaming “I’m in a band!” in the song).

New Endeavors, Post Atlantic

Though Hayley Williams is currently embarking on a solo tour disconnected from Paramore, she is not done being in a band yet.

Williams has also stated that Paramore is not over. They are simply on a hiatus as they focus on individual endeavors. Both Taylor York and Zac Farro have been involved with projects outside of Paramore as well.

In a conversation with Jack Antanoff and Rolling Stone, Williams famously says, “I want to be in 100 bands before I die.”

Collaborations

Hayley Williams has been no stranger to collaborations in the past. Prior to breaking apart from her label, she has had notable features on songs by Taylor Swift, Zedd, B.o.B., American Football and CHVRCHES.

Paramore also did a cover of “Burning Down the House” by Talking Heads and David Byrne covered “Hard Times.” This was released as a Record Store Day special pressing in 2024.

Now, Williams has been collaborating with several artists in recordings and live settings. She has released songs with Failure, Night Party and most notably, Beabadoobee. She also joined David Byrne onstage at a recent tour stop at Radio City Music Hall.

Power Snatch

Power Snatch is Williams’ newest project in collaboration with producer Daniel James. Together, they have released songs on Bandcamp, including “DMs,” “DUH,” “HOLE IN THE CEILING,” and “ASSIGNMENT.” They have collaborated with Tiberius b and This is Lorelei (a project founded by Nate from Water From Your Eyes who opened for Williams on her tour).

Power Snatch has a very alternative bass-heavy electronic sound that features some talking vocals as well as Williams’ famous traditional singing. James is the main producer and arranger of the tracks. This project is very new and it has been hinted that there will be new music coming soon.
